The Language of Veterinary Anatomy: A 3D Walkthrough

Why can a single point on an animal be described as both proximal and distal? And what's the difference between axial/abaxial and medial/lateral? If those questions make you wince a little, you're in good company. 🐾 Our Language of Anatomy module is here to help, and it's available on both IVALA Learn and VIN.

Built with Dr Augusto Coppi

We built this module with Dr Augusto Coppi, a senior lecturer in veterinary anatomy in the UK. It teaches the terminology we use to describe anatomy, which is an absolutely crucial skill: it's the vocabulary behind every textbook, lecture, clinical note and referral letter you'll ever read.

How walkthrough mode works

The module is based around our walkthrough mode. Click the feet icon on the left and you enter the walkthrough. Control of the camera is taken away from you, so you can no longer drag things around. Instead you get information on screen and can step back and forth through the different steps, each one explaining a term on the 3D skeleton.

Handy shortcuts

  • Skip ahead or back to a particular part of the walkthrough using the step numbers.
  • Exit at any time by clicking the feet button on the left again, which takes you back to the normal mode.

Who it's for

We thoroughly recommend it if you're in the early stages of learning anatomy, but it's a nice refresher at any stage. We learned a lot from making it too! The module also has a second scene, Limb Movement, which animates the terms used for limb movement.
