Canine Larynx in 3D, Animated: Normal Movement and Paralysis

The canine larynx was always so difficult to understand: the different cartilages, their shapes and how they relate to each other. We think we've done a nice job of recreating it as a schematic, with the muscles, the cartilages, the hyoid apparatus and a representation of the nerve in the area. And something cool: we've animated it too. 👆🏼

Dissect it down

You can turn off the hyoid apparatus and the nerve, hide the epiglottis, and use the positioning gizmo to get a nice cranial view straight into the larynx.

Normal movement and laryngeal paralysis

Under the Animate tab you'll find buttons for normal movement during respiration, plus left and right laryngeal paralysis. Watch the muscles and, primarily, the arytenoid cartilages move, with the vocal folds in there too. We created these animations with an airway specialist, and there are some lovely subtleties in the paralysis animations that came from their recommendations. It's a really nice reference for what happens during normal laryngeal movement and in paralysis.

We're getting really interested in creating animations within our content, so if there's something you'd like us to animate, please let us know.
