The Canine Eye in 3D: Functional Anatomy Layer by Layer

The eye is a very, very complex structure, so with our canine eye content we've done our best to break it down into its functional anatomy. 👁️

Sort the eye by anatomical layer

You can sort the eye by the different anatomical layers you'll commonly hear it broken up into. Working through it layer by layer is a much friendlier way to understand the intraocular anatomy than trying to take in the whole structure at once.

Input from a veterinary ophthalmologist

We were lucky enough to have Ben Blacklock, a veterinary ophthalmologist at Dick White Referrals in the UK, give us some great comments on the eye. He also wrote a blog post for us on why understanding fundic anatomy matters: how these structures relate to one another and what they produce on the fundic exam.

Why it matters in the clinic

Knowing what you're looking at through the ophthalmoscope starts with knowing the layers and structures behind it, so this is a nice one to revisit before your ophthalmology rotation.
