Veterinary Flashcards: Build Your Own Decks

You know us for our 3D interactive content, and that's still our focus, but we're always looking for new ways to help you learn. So we've been working with anatomists and Diplomates on two new types of content, and the first is flashcards. 🃏

Flip, think, check

You're probably familiar with physical or digital flashcards: information on one side, more on the other. On our anatomy cards you get a clue about an anatomical landmark, have a think, then flip to see what it is. It's a simple way to test yourself.

More than two sides

One nice thing about digital flashcards is that there's no limit to the number of sides. Some of our cards have three: an image with a highlighted landmark, then the answer, then more information about that landmark. If a card looks wrong or isn't clear enough, you can report it and we'll take a look.

Not just anatomy

Flashcards don't have to be about anatomy. For example, there's a urinalysis deck written by a clinical pathologist at the Veterinary Information Network, using a true or false style with the reference for each answer shown alongside.

Build your own flashcard course

When we recorded this we had about 2,000 flashcards across lots of specialties, so we made it possible to build custom courses on the topics you care about. Cards are tagged by everything from species and body system to diagnosis.

  • Additive mode gives you every card with any of the tags you pick (anaesthesia had 44 cards, for example).
  • Exclusive mode shows only cards with all of your tags, such as clinical pathology plus microscopy plus parasites.
  • You can then filter for cards that contain multimedia (a GIF, image or video), name your course and save it to your personal library.

Where to find them

On IVALA Learn, flashcards are part of the normal content: head to the library page and scroll or filter on the left. On VIN, you'll find them under the Student Center tile for flashcards and multiple choice questions, on the Center for Online Veterinary Educational Resources page and in the VIN multimedia library. The content is the same across all sites. When we recorded this, our focus was on completing anatomy, especially for the canine and equine, with non-anatomical cards being developed alongside.
