Equine Gaits in 3D: Animated Walk Cycles and Canter Leads

Here's a really fun bit of content: animated equine gaits. 🐴 Our thoroughbred horse brings the most common gaits to life as fully rotatable 3D animations.

We've since updated the animations with left and right lead canters. Here's what changed:

Every gait, from any angle

Use the panel on the right to switch between walk, pace, trot, canter and gallop (plus idle), and view the horse from any angle, using the positioning gizmo to jump between views. What's particularly interesting is the footfall: how each gait is defined by the way the hooves meet the ground.

Slow it right down

We've added an animation speed slider to both the equine and the canine gaits. It goes all the way down to a tenth of normal speed, so you can examine each gait closely.

Canter leads and a four-beat gallop

In our update, we split the canter into a left lead and a right lead, two common ways a horse canters. We also made sure the gallop is clearly shown as a four-beat gait rather than a three-beat one, as there was some ambiguity there. Next up is a panel that shows exactly when each hoof touches the ground, which will make the differences between gaits even clearer.

You'll find it in the menu under Terminology > Equine gait animations, and on VIN via Library > Learn Anatomy in 3D.
