Canine Head Muscles in 3D, Sorted by Innervation

Here's a quick preview of our canine skull musculature content. 🐶 It works in a very similar way to our canine forelimb and hindlimb muscles, and it's designed to help you understand the origins and insertions of the different muscle groups over the canine skull.

Sort the muscles by their nerve supply

As with the limbs, you can sort the musculature by its innervation. In the video we bring up the muscles supplied by the trigeminal nerve, then the facial nerve, and the accessory and cervical nerves. These are the major nerves involved in innervating the muscles of the region, and grouping muscles this way makes much more sense of the signs you see with a cranial nerve deficit, such as a dropped jaw or facial paralysis.

Test yourself

There's also our Test Yourself mode. Click on a muscle, type in its name and check whether you're right, then hide it and move on to the next one. In the video we name the platysma. Get one wrong and you can check the correct answer, so every mistake becomes a chance to learn.
